KUALA LUMPUR – Grab Malaysia has successfully generated 10,000 job opportunities for Terengganu residents, known as Grab Partners, since commencing operations in the east coast state in 2017.

Grab Malaysia’s Director of Operations and Mobility, Rashid Shukor, said that the company aims to empower the local economy by leveraging technology solutions that support its community of Grab Partners, Bernama reported.

Last year alone, Terengganu’s Grab Partners earned over RM10 million through the platform. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the state also experienced a 20% year-on-year increase in business registrations since Grab’s entry.

“The establishment of Grab Malaysia has benefited people across all walks of life, regardless of race, age, or gender. In Terengganu, we are proud to have over 100 female Grab Partners and 60 persons with disabilities (PwDs),” Rashid said.

He highlighted that more than half of local SMEs achieved five-star ratings on the Grab platform, reflecting the high quality and trust fostered through Grab’s digital ecosystem.

Beyond job creation, Grab has also boosted Terengganu’s tourism sector by offering digital platforms to showcase the state’s cultural heritage and attractions to visitors.

“From transport to food delivery and merchant solutions, Grab’s services align with Terengganu’s vision for sustainable tourism. We aim to enhance travel experiences, increase visitor numbers, and support community-based tourism initiatives, a cornerstone of the state’s strategy,” Rashid shared during the TechTarik dialogue programme in Kuala Terengganu.

Empowering livelihoods

Single mother and Grab Partner, 52-year-old Zaimah Mohamed, began her e-hailing journey in 2017 to supplement her income and support her five children.

As a low-income worker in a private company, Zaimah struggled to meet her family’s expenses.

“My salary only covered debts and other commitments. Thankfully, driving with Grab allowed me to provide food, pay for my children’s schooling, and save for their education,” she said, adding that two of her children are now pursuing university degrees thanks to her savings.

Zaimah continues to drive for Grab daily, balancing her work from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Boosting local businesses

Meanwhile, entrepreneur Hani Syuhadah Borhanuddin, 33, who runs the Roti Jala King Size stall in Kampung Losong Haji Su, shared that her sales have soared to RM15,000 a month since joining GrabFood in 2019.

“Grab Malaysia’s promotions have helped my business grow, and I’ve maintained a 4.8-star rating. GrabFin has also been instrumental in managing my finances during challenging times,” she said, praising the platform’s role in fostering sustainable business growth. – November 24, 2024
