KUALA LUMPUR — More than half of National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) borrowers who have not repaid their loans are not cash aid recipients.
The Higher Education Ministry said this group of debtors were 225,529 people or 54.3% of the fund’s 415,109 borrowers who have never made repayments as of August 31 this year.
PTPTN has around 430,000 borrowers who have not made any payments towards their loans.
“Based on our data, 189,580 borrowers or 45.7% of those who have never made repayments, are recipients of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) cash aid, while 225,529 borrowers or 54.3% are not STR recipients.”
The ministry said this in a parliamentary written reply yesterday to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (Jerantut-PN) who askedhow many PTPTN borrowers are already employed with salaries of more than RM3,000 but are not repaying their education loans.
Khairil Nizam also asked how many of such cases were from his constituency.
To this, the ministry said that Jerantut had 1,710 borrowers , who, as of August 31, had never made loan repayments which amounted to RM38.17 million.
In a separate written reply earlier this month, the ministry on Nov 10 said RM32 billion from 2.7 million loans given had not been repaid. – November 21, 2024
