A glitch or a hack? Malaysians report Waze app switching unexpectedly to Hebrew

Reports of unexpected language changes and altered car icons raise user concerns

KUALA LUMPUR – Users worldwide, including those in Malaysia, are reporting a potential glitch with the Waze navigation app that has unexpectedly switched the app’s language to Hebrew.

Waze, is a satellite navigation software owned by Google was created in Israel, where Hebrew is the official language.

Meanwhile, X user @princesslalolaa from Malaysia also mentioned that the voice navigation feature on Waze also switched to Hebrew.

“What happened to my waze? Suddenly it switched to the Jewish language (Hebrew). Scary,” @princesslalolaa said.

@NurAmmelia, also mentioned that she experienced the same issue with the app, and uninstalled Waze out of fear of being hacked.

However, peculiarly, for @afaz64, the language on his application changed to Arabic and the animation for his car switched to a dragon instead.

British publication, The Sun said that some users complained that their car icon changed to a taxi, adding that deleting and reinstalling the application does not resolve the glitch.

They also mentioned that the glitch has not affected all Waze users.

Another publication called autoevolution reported yesterday that Waze has introduced several updates to their application, including refining their car icon collection.

Meanwhile, the application also updated the user interface for Apple CarPlay users by introducing a floating box for the lower navigation box which displays the estimated time of arrival and other information.

However, it remains uncertain whether these reported updates are related to the glitches that are currently being reported. – November 6, 2024
