No tariff hike for electricity, water in 2025, govt to keep targeted subsidies

Government maintains targeted subsidies benefiting 85% of the population, while high electricity users face adjusted rates

KUALA LUMPUR – The Madani government will continue targeted subsidies for electricity and water tariffs after the move generated RM4 billion in savings in 2023.

In tabling the Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Tambun-PH) said this continued approach aims to curb leakages caused by previous blanket subsidies on electricity and water tariffs.

While 85% of the population continue to enjoy the targeted subsidies, it does not apply to electricity users exceeding 600 kWh.

Meanwhile, adjustments to water tariffs have also been implemented this year, in line with the requests of almost all states, including opposition-held ones. – October 18, 2024
