KUALA LUMPUR — Former US president Donald Trump faced another assassination attempt yesterday but is safe after a Secret Service agent spotted and fired towards the suspect.

The suspect, described as a white male by Florida police, fled and was later arrested.

US media report that Trump was playing golf at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday and the suspect was around 300 metres to 500 metres ahead of him hiding behind a fence in a wooded area.

A Secret Service agent scouting ahead of the former president spotted the muzzle of a firearm pointing through the fence and opened fire, causing the suspect to flee.

The suspect was arrested after police used information from photographs taken by a witness.

An AK-47 style assault rifle and scope were recovered from the golf course.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation have called the episode “an attempted assassination” of Trump, who two months ago was injured in another attempt while on stage at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania for his second presidential bid.

The first attempt, on July 13, saw Trump injured in his right ear when the bullet grazed him. A rally spectator was killed, others were injured, and the assassin was shot by Secret Service snipers. — September 16, 2024
