GEORGE TOWN – Several parts of Penang were hit by flash floods after heavy rains lashed the island from midday onwards.
A Scoop review of the Penang Weather Watch Facebook page, which monitors flood incidents in the state, revealed numerous videos and photos of submerged areas, including Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Bukit Jambul, and Air Itam.
Bayan Baru experienced its second flash flood this week, following a similar incident on Tuesday morning after a downpour. The area is known to be particularly vulnerable during the rainy season.
On the mainland, flash floods were reported in Lahar Tiang and Taman Pinggiran in Kepala Batas, according to the Komuniti Kepala Batas Facebook page.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department confirmed they had received reports of flooding in Bayan Lepas and were awaiting updates from other affected areas when contacted by Scoop.
Separately, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued thunderstorm and heavy rain warnings for Penang, along with Pahang, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Sabah, Sarawak, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya, in effect until 7.00pm on September 7, 2024. – September 7, 2024
