Wisma Putra probing into ‘baseless’ video questioning Sabah’s place in Malaysia

Foreign Ministry says nation will never recognise any claims on the Borneo state

KUALA LUMPUR – The Foreign Ministry is investigating an online video clip said to feature “baseless and misleading” content questioning Sabah’s sovereignty as an integral part of Malaysia.

Wisma Putra, with the help of relevant ministries and agencies, is undertaking a thorough investigation into the video circulated on online social media platforms.

“At this juncture, the ministry wishes to reiterate the long-standing position of the government… (that) Malaysia has never and will not recognise any claims on Sabah,” it said in a statement today.

“Sabah has been recognised by the United Nations and the international community as part of Malaysia since the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.

“The people of Sabah had exercised their self-determination rights on the formation of Malaysia through the 1962 Cobbold Commission.”

The ministry added that the government will continue its efforts to defend the East Malaysian state’s sovereignty.

This, it said, will be done while ensuring that the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests are protected at all times. – July 29, 2024
