King Charles congratulates Sultan Ibrahim over historic coronation

British monarch anticipates continued collaboration and deepening of ties as Malaysia crowns its new King

KUALA LUMPUR – Britain’s King Charles extended his heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the newly installed King and Queen of Malaysia. 

The message of goodwill was delivered by British high commissioner Ailsa Terry.

In his message, King Charles expressed his warm wishes and anticipation for continued collaboration between the two nations. 

“I write to congratulate you most warmly on your Coronation as The King of Malaysia. I look forward to working with you to strengthen the bonds between our people and deepen the close cooperation between our nations,” King Charles said.

King Charles also highlighted the enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

“As Commonwealth partners, the United Kingdom and Malaysia share common values and long-standing links in areas such as education, trade, technology and defence.

“I hope we can continue to build on all that unites us in the years ahead, including our shared commitment to tackle climate change and safeguard the natural environment for future generations.”

High commissioner Terry, present at the Istana Negara this morning, also conveyed her warm regards. 

“It is an absolute honour for me to attend His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim’s Coronation, and to convey a special congratulatory message from King Charles III on this auspicious occasion. 

“The long-standing ties between the Royals from both our countries and the deep people-to-people links form the foundation of the modern partnership between the UK and Malaysia.”

The installation ceremony of Malaysia’s 17th King, rich in tradition and ceremonial splendour, was held at the Balairung Seri (Throne Room) of the Istana Negara. The historic event was graced by hundreds of esteemed guests, including Malay rulers, governors, cabinet members and foreign dignitaries.

Among the notable attendees were Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and his wife, Raja Isteri Pangiran Anak Hajah Saleha, as well as King of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. – July 20, 2024
