PUTRAJAYA – The Deaf Advocacy and Well-Being National Organisation (DAWN) has urged the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to expedite the prosecution of a VVIP escort who allegedly assaulted a disabled e-hailing driver, Ong Ing Keong, in May.
The organisation’s co-founder, Anthony Chong, expressed frustration with the lack of progress two months after the incident. He stressed the importance of swift action to ensure the safety and inclusion of the disabled community.
“We urge the AGC to take immediate and decisive action to prosecute the perpetrator of this attack (because) no action has been taken in this case until now.
“Despite Malaysia’s reputation as a harmonious country, the disabled community continues to face unequal justice and is often marginalised.
“Are the voices of the deaf people with disabilities not heard? Even though we are deaf, we will not remain silent (until justice is served),” he said when met at the AGC headquarters, here, today.
Chong, along with 10 other deaf and mute individuals, including the victim, visited the AGC headquarters today to submit a memorandum demanding immediate prosecution. The group hopes this will expedite the AGC’s actions against the VVIP escort.
It is understood that the investigation paper was submitted to the AGC on June 4.
Previously, Scoop reported that the police confirmed receiving the victim’s report on May 28, the same day the incident occurred at the St Regis Hotel lobby in Kuala Lumpur.
On May 31, Ong Ing Keong stated that he never retracted his police report, claiming that a police officer handling his case gave him two choices – accept a sum of money from an ‘Istana’ representative or risk having his phone confiscated if the case went to court.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed the incident and said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for assault. – July 19, 2024
