KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 14,042 cases of sexual crimes against children were registered in court between 2018 and 2023.
This was revealed by Minister of Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in a parliamentary written reply yesterday.
She added that this figure was according to the statistics provided by the chief registrar of the Federal Court.
“Cases reported were 2,179 in 2018, 1,799 in 2019, 1,869 in 2020, 2,832 in 2021, 2,818 in 2022, and 2,545 in 2023.
Azalina was responding to Syerleena Abdul Rashid (Bukit Bendera-PH), who asked about the number of child sexual crimes from 2018 to 2023, categorised by outcomes such as no further action, under investigation, complaint withdrawn, and brought to trial.
Separately, Azalina also cited police statistics, indicating that a total of 7,727 investigation papers were initiated for child sexual crimes from 2018 through May this year.
Among the total, 1,954 cases remain under investigation, 1,550 cases have been closed without further action, and 4,223 cases are actively in court. – July 17, 2024
