Relieved but tight-lipped: Jamaluddin Jarjis’s family dispute over RM2.1 bil property settled amicably

Late politician’s wife, mother, children reach mutual agreement after three-hour discussion, lawyer says terms of agreement cannot be disclosed

KUALA LUMPUR – The wife, mother, and children of the late politician Tan Sri Jamaluddin Jarjis have amicably concluded their six-year legal dispute over properties worth RM2.1 billion today.

Lawyer Nur Hidayah A. Bakar, representing Jamaluddin’s mother Aminah Abdullah, confirmed the settlement to the press after it was recorded and endorsed as a court order before shariah high court judge Abu Suffian Abu Yaziz.

She said the settlement was a mutual agreement reached after today’s three-hour discussion between all parties and their lawyers.

Jamaluddin’s widow, Puan Sri Kalsom Ismail, along with his children and mother, appeared visibly relieved as they left the court today, though they remained tight-lipped.

“This settlement encompasses Jamaluddin’s matrimonial assets and inheritance both within and outside Malaysia, as well as all his companies.

“All parties have reached a mutual agreement to settle this matter, and the terms cannot be disclosed to the public.

“However, this settlement also reflects everyone’s intention to maintain their good relationship with one another.

“With this settlement, all previous legal disputes have been put to rest,” Hidayah said.

Kalsom was represented by Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar in today’s proceedings.

Yesterday, Nur Hidayah confirmed to Scoop that today’s discussion would be the second round of talks to reach a settlement, following a failed attempt to settle out of court in September last year.

However, she added that today’s discussion was the first to involve lawyers. Previous discussions were held solely among family members involved in the suit.

Jamaluddin’s 68-year-old widow filed the suit against her children and mother-in-law in October 2018 to claim matrimonial assets, including 20 properties in Malaysia, Mecca, and the United States, as well as several companies – totalling RM2.1 billion.

She named her mother-in-law, Aminah, and her and Jamaluddin’s children – Ikwan Hafiz, Nur Anis, Nurul Alyaa, Noor Adilla – as the defendants.

As the wife of the deceased, Kalsom is entitled to one-eighth of the estate according to “faraid”  or Islamic inheritance jurisprudence. The mother of the deceased is entitled to one-sixth of the estate, while the deceased’s children are to share the remainder of the estate.

However, Ikhwan Hafiz and Nur Anis were granted letters of administration by the civil high court in 2017 to manage the estate.

Jamaluddin, formerly Rompin MP and a cabinet member, died aged 63 in a helicopter crash on April 4, 2015. He was one of six people killed in the incident. – July 3, 2024
