New beginnings: Sabah debuts its own MM2H programme

Move aims to attract retirees, expatriates, long-term residents amid disagreements with federal Tourism Ministry

KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah government has disregarded its disagreements with the federal Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry (Motac) and today launched its own version of the Malaysia My Second Home programme, known as Sabah-MM2H.

State Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said that to avoid conflicts, the Sabah-MM2H programme will now appoint its own agents instead of relying on those appointed by Motac.

This decision comes in response to Motac’s nationwide termination of all MM2H agent permits on May 27, which has impacted the scheduled launch of MM2H programmes in Sabah on June 1.

At today’s launching ceremony at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Liew appeared hesitant to discuss the conflict between the Sabah Tourism Ministry and Motac.

“I believe there may be some misunderstandings, but we prefer not to dwell on them.

“As previously explained, the application process involves about five or six steps, all duly approved by both state and federal authorities, including Motac,” she said, speaking to reporters after the event.

Earlier, in her speech, Liew emphasised that the programme is tailored specifically to highlight the unique attractions and opportunities that Sabah has to offer, and it has a different set of requirements than the national MM2H programme.

She said the main objective of the Sabah-MM2H programme is to position Sabah as the preferred destination for retirees, expatriates, and individuals looking to either relocate, enjoy a long-term residence, or have a second home outside of their own country.

Liew hoped that the programme would become a catalyst for cultural exchange, economic vitality, and sustainable development within communities in Sabah.

“The Sabah-MM2H programme offers a 10-year renewable visa with multiple-entry privileges. This will allow participants to gain the freedom to explore and experience all that Sabah has to offer without the constraints of traditional visa limitations,” she added.

Participants in the programme will also have the opportunity to own property in Sabah, access to quality healthcare services, and the option to enrol their children in reputable educational institutions, among others.

Additionally, it is hoped that the programme will also foster economic growth and development within Sabah.

“Hence, we invite all prospective participants and stakeholders to consider Sabah not just as a destination but as a place to call home – a place where nature harmonises with the warmth of our people, creating a high quality of life,” she said.
