NEW DELHI – Some flights from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were suspended on Friday morning after a section of Terminal 1’s roof collapsed following heavy rain, the airport said.
At least one person was killed and six were injured, German news agency (dpa) quoted broadcaster NDTV news channel and news agency PTI reports.
According to NDTV, the victims were in four vehicles on which the beams collapsed.
“Due to heavy rain since early morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5am (2330 GMT Thursday),” the airport said in a statement, adding that injuries were reported.
All departures from Terminal 1 were initially suspended. In an 8.45am update, the airport said all flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 were fully operational, while departing flights from Terminal 1 were cancelled till 2pm the same day.
Meanwhile, heavy rains during the early hours of Friday threw normal life out of gear in the Indian capital city, as severe water logging was witnessed at several places, reported Xinhua.
Vehicles were seen submerged in stagnant waters under the bridges after the heavy downpour that lasted for at least three hours. Poor drainage system was blamed for the severe water-logging.
Many places in the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) area which houses several important government buildings and also the official residences of federal lawmakers, senior judges and administration officials, experienced severe knee-deep waterlogging. – June 28, 2024
