RTD opens course for aspiring driving instructors without SPM

Minister says initiative will run from July 1 to December 31 at JPJ Academy Melaka

PUTRAJAYA – The Road Transport Department (RTD) will be offering a temporary exemption for individuals without SPM certifications to undergo a two-week course to qualify as instructors at driving institutes.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this initiative will run from July 1 to December 31 and the course will be held at the Road Transport Academy in Melaka.

Upon completion of the course, candidates must pass an exam to earn their instructor certificate.

This programme is meant to increase student enrolments, boost instructor income and strengthen driving institutes.

“Many experienced drivers have the potential to become the best instructors, but they do not get the chance due to their lack of academic qualifications.

“Their abilities should not be ignored just because they don’t have SPM qualifications,” Loke said at the launch of the fourth annual general meeting of the Malaysian Driving Institute Association in Putrajaya today.

The programme is also aimed at addressing the shortage of qualified driving instructors, which will lead to shorter waiting times for students to take their driving lessons and expediting the process of obtaining a driver’s licence.

Previously, the driving school instructors’ certification was restricted to individuals with SPM certificates. – June 25, 2024
