KUALA LUMPUR – National carrier Malaysia Airlines has made its way up the ranks to secure a spot as the world’s 39th best airline in this year’s Skytrax Awards.

The awards, announced yesterday, saw Malaysia Airlines’ ranking improve eight places compared to last year’s 47th position – a slight drop from its 44th rank in 2022.

The higher placement for 2024 comes amid the flag carrier’s troubles late last year when it faced catering issues for a brief stint following a decision by its parent company, Malaysia Aviation Group, to terminate its 26-year partnership with Brahim’s Food Services Sdn Bhd.

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways topped the list to claim the World’s Best Airline title, marking the eighth time it has managed to secure the recognition from the awards, recognising the quality of services provided to commercial aviation passengers.

With the Middle Eastern carrier securing the win, last year’s winner, Singapore Airlines, came in second, while Emirates bagged the final podium spot.

Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways came in fourth, followed by Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Taiwan’s EVA Air, Air France and Swiss International Airlines, making up the top 10 winners.

Besides that, budget airline AirAsia managed to retain its hold on the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline crown, with this year’s success making it the 13th consecutive time the airlines under Capital A Bhd has managed to secure the award.

Another repeat winner was Bangkok Airways, which grabbed the World’s Best Regional Airline prize for the eighth consecutive year, and Ethiopian Airlines, which was named Africa’s best for the sixth year in a row.

The full list of the Skytrax Awards’ winners can be found on the World Airline Awards website.

The rankings are based on online customer surveys in multiple languages to over 100 nationalities from September 2023 to May 2024. – June 25, 2024
