KUALA LUMPUR – More than 63,000 durian farmers in Malaysia will be able to export fresh durian to China, bringing the export value to RM1.8 billion in 2030.

This comes after a deal was sealed between the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and China’s Customs Department today.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said China is the main exporter of Malaysian durian – in the form of frozen fruit, flesh and paste – spending RM887 million in 2022.

“Between 2018 and 2022, the total export value of durian grew by 256.3% or an increase of RM822.8 million.

“In 2022, Malaysia recorded RM1.14 billion worldwide in durian exports. Durian is the main contributor (58.6%) to Malaysia’s total fruit exports in 2022, which amounted to RM2.01 billion.

“The export value of durian is projected to continue to increase to RM1.8 billion in 2030,” he said in a statement today.

The phytosanitary protocols were signed by Mohamad and Yu Jianhua, the head of China’s General Administration of Customs.

The documents were received by China’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing which was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and China Premier Li Qiang at Putra Perdana, Putrajaya, today.

To benefit from this, durian operators registered and approved by China’s Customs will be allowed to export fresh fruits in accordance with the agreement’s terms.
