KUALA LUMPUR – The five family members of the suspect killed in the Ulu Tiram police station attack last month were charged in a Johor Bahru court this morning on multiple counts, including supporting a terrorist group.

The suspect’s father, Radin Imran Radin Mohd Yassin, 62, was charged with four counts under the Penal Code, including Section 130(G) on inciting, promoting and soliciting for the commission of terrorist acts, Berita Harian reports.

The suspect’s mother, Rosna Jantan, 59, is a Singaporean, according to the news portal.

Three others charged were the suspect’s siblings, Radin Romyullah Radin Imran, 34; Farhah Sobrina Radin Imran, 23; and Mariah Radin Imran, 19.

The five were arrested on May 24 following the attack on May 17 and have been held by police under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act  2012 (Sosma).

Radin Imran’s wife, Rosna, and daughters, Farhah Sobrina and Mariah, were each charged with one count.

His son, Radin Romyullah, was charged with two counts.

The charges were read to each individual separately before sessions court judge Datuk Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim.

The charges

The first of Radin Imran’s four charges is for allegedly encouraging terrorist acts by promoting Islamic State (IS) ideology to his family, including to the Ulu Tiram attacker, his son Radin Luqman, 21.

Radin Imran allegedly promoted such ideology to his family between the end of 2014 and May 17, 2024, at a house in Kg Sg Tiram, The Star reports, citing the charge sheet.

He faces 30 years in jail and a fine upon conviction for the offence, which is under Section 130G(a) of the Penal Code.

His second charge is under Section 130J(1)(b), which accuses him of supporting terrorism by storing four home-made air rifles for the IS at the same house on May 17. This is punishable with life imprisonment or up to 40 years, plus a fine and confiscation of the said items.

Radin Imran’s third charge is for pleading loyalty to IS head Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi at the same location at the end of 2014. This also carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The fourth charge is for possessing the book “Hakikat Islam & Hakikat Syirik” by Abu Sulaiman Aman Abdurrahman, which is linked to the IS.

Meanwhile, son Radin Romyullah was charged with swearing loyalty to Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi and possessing an external hard disk containing materials on the IS. Both offences were allegedly committed at the same house between the end of 2014 and May 17.

He also faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for the first offence.

The women in the family, Rosna and daughters Farhah Sobrina and Mariah, were charged with deliberately omitting to provide information regarding crimes related to terrorist ideology and face imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine.

The family was not represented in court, and judge Che Wan Zaidi advised them to appoint a lawyer.

No bail was offered, while the judge set July 31 for the case re-mention.

The family was brought to the Johor Bahru court this morning under heavy guard by around 30 police officers.

In the 2.54am attack on May 17, the assailant Radin Luqman killed two policemen; Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.

He also injured another officer, Mohd Hasif Roslan, who shot him dead.

He had been armed with a machete but seized firearms from the officers.

Besides his five family members, two university students who were at the scene during the incident were also detained.

Police later released the two students after receiving instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Police also said Radin Luqman’s father was a Jemaah Islamiyah member, and the family lived in a closed-knit community. – June 19, 2024
