KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu has issued termination notices to six of its elected representatives over non-compliance with the party’s regulations.
In a statement released today, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said that the six representatives were found in violation of Article 10.4 of the Bersatu constitution.
The decision follows the directive of the party’s supreme council, which convened on June 7, and was subsequently communicated to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership during their meeting last night.
Consequently, immediate termination notices were issued to them today.
Additionally, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman’s membership was terminated earlier, on May 17, under Article 10.2.6 of the Bersatu constitution.
Hamzah emphasised that all actions taken were in strict adherence to the party’s constitution and national laws, as stipulated under Article 49(A) of the Federal Constitution and relevant state legislation.
Earlier today, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said it will send notices to seven of its members soon regarding the status of their membership, as well as the parliamentary and state seats they currently hold.
He said that after that, he will send a notice to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, the Selangor Legislative Assembly speaker and the Kelantan Legislative Assembly speaker regarding their positions.
Previously, six Bersatu MPs and one state assemblyman had their party memberships revoked after failing to respond to a written instruction from the party’s supreme leadership council to pledge allegiance to the party.
The six MPs are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang). The assemblyman is Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (Selat Klang).
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin, who is also PN chairman, confirmed that PAS would represent PN in the Sg Bakap by-election in Penang and that PAS would announce its candidate on Saturday.
The Election Commission has set July 6 as polling day for the Sg Bakap by-election, with nominations to be held on June 22 and early voting on July 2.
The by-election is being held following the death of incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
In the last state election, Nor Zamri, who was PAS Nibong Tebal president, defeated Pakatan Harapan’s Nurhidayah Che Ros with a majority of 1,563 votes. – June 12, 2024
