KUALA LUMPUR – The unity government has finalised its candidate for the upcoming Sg Bakap by-election, according to its secretariat chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

In a statement, Asyraf confirmed that the candidate will be announced tomorrow.

Additionally, Asyraf said that Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli have been appointed as co-chairmen to lead the unity government’s election machinery.

This decision followed a meeting involving the supreme councils of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN in Putrajaya today.

For the Sg Bakap by-election, Penang PKR deputy chairman Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid and state Umno information chief Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir will serve as joint operation chairmen, representing the government in Penang.

The Election Commission has scheduled polling day for July 6, with nominations on June 22 and early voting on July 2.

The by-election is necessary due to the death of incumbent, PAS’ Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 from stomach inflammation.

In the last state election, Nor Zamri, who was PAS Nibong Tebal president, defeated PH’s Nurhidayah Che Ros with a majority of 1,563 votes. – June 11, 2024
