KUALA LUMPUR – Deaf e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong has been summoned to Bukit Aman tomorrow to provide a statement on his alleged assault at the hands of a VVIP’s bodyguard.

According to Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), he will be at the police headquarters at 11am along with his legal representatives.

It was only last Saturday that Ong was called to the Brickfields district police headquarters, where he was questioned for almost three hours regarding the alleged assault.

Following which, his lawyer N. Surendran said police mentioned investigations into the matters were 80% complete and investigation papers should be sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) this week.

At a press conference last week, Ong said he was punched by a bodyguard of a VVIP at the St Regis Hotel here on May 28.

He told the press that when he went to file a report at the police station on the same day, a representative from the palace was present and offered compensation to end the matter.

The bodyguard being investigated is reportedly a member of the security detail of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who has called for a thorough investigation, urging authorities to give the victim justice. The crown prince also said the personnel involved is from the police.

The investigation into the alleged assault was confirmed a day after the incident by Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

He said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 323 of the Penal Code on voluntarily causing hurt.

There was initial confusion over the case after KL police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the victim had lodged a second police report to state that the matter had been settled and that he did not wish to prolong the issue.

However, Rusdi later said the matter is still under investigation. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain vowed a thorough probe and no compromise for the perpetrator if found guilty. – June 4, 2024
