Penang Hill funicular service temporarily closed for maintenance from tomorrow

Operations set to resume June 12, but alternative options to reach summit available during closing period including private jeep, hiking trails

KUALA LUMPUR – The temporary closure of the Penang Hill funicular service and the Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff will commence tomorrow (June 5) and last until June 11, this year for their bi-annual maintenance works.

In an announcement on Facebook, the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said funicular service and gallery are set to resume operations on June 12, 2024.

However, visitors will still have other options to reach the Penang Hill summit.

The Penang Hill Jeep Service Association offers a private jeep service, which can be accessed from the Penang Rifle Club car park at the Penang Botanic Gardens.

Interested visitors can contact the association at 012-4541255 for more details. Additionally, hiking enthusiasts can use the existing trails to make their way up to the hill’s peak.

“PHC apologises for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding,” it said.

In March, PHC announced new ticket fares for the funicular service, which took effect on May 1.

The new fare for round trip tickets on the normal route for MyKad, MyKid, valid resident ID or work permit holders, as well as spouses of Malaysian citizens, would be RM16 for adults, up from the current RM12 and one-way tickets are now priced at RM8, compared to the current RM6.

Meanwhile, the revised return trip price for children aged 4 to 12 and seniors aged 60 and above is RM8, up from RM6 and the one-way fare stands at RM4.

Sunrise tickets for MyKad and MyKid holders, which are available during off-peak seasons were increased from RM3 to RM5, while entry for persons with disabilities remains free.

PHC said that the hike in ticket fees is a result of mounting operational and maintenance costs of services and infrastructure.

It said that the situation was unavoidable, prompting PHC to revise ticket prices occasionally, with the last revision taking place in 2019. – June 4, 2024
