KUALA LUMPUR – The lawyer representing the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, the murdered autistic child, announced that he is no longer representing them as of today.

Mahmud Abdul Jumaat of Emir Mahmud & Co said that the decision was made due to “unavoidable circumstances”.

“I pray that this case proceeds smoothly according to the existing legal process.

“As a legal practitioner, I advise all parties to respect the legal process and avoid making wild speculations about this case for the common good,” he said in a statement today.

When contacted by Scoop, Mahmud said the decision to no longer represent the couple may only apply to the mother, but this has yet to be finalised.

“The matter has not been confirmed, but for now it (the decision) applies to both.”

Previously, Mahmud was appointed by Zayn Rayyan’s parents after the 28-year-old couple was detained by police at their family home in Puncak Alam last Friday.

He was also present during the remand hearing for the couple at Petaling Jaya court last Saturday, where magistrate Ainaa Muhammad Kamal granted a seven-day remand until this Friday (June 7).

Earlier, Scoop reported that Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the parents were remanded for a week to allow further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

On December 6 last year, Zayn Rayyan’s body was found in a creek about 200m from his family’s home at Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya.

The victim was confirmed to have been murdered based on the autopsy, which revealed injuries to his neck and body.

The day before, the police confirmed they had received a report of the child’s disappearance from his family. – June 4, 2024
