PETALING JAYA – The parents of Zayn Rayyan, the autistic child who was found dead near his home in Damansara Damai last December, have been remanded for seven days starting today.

Their lawyer, Mahmud Abdul Jumaat, confirmed that magistrate Azura Mohd Saad has allowed the police’s application for remand on the couple this morning. He said this when met at the courthouse, here this morning.

He added that the remand, which will end on June 7, assists ongoing investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“We remain unsure if there will be charges made once police wrap up their investigation.

“There are few new developments in police investigations, including new evidence and their statements recorded previously, which led to their arrest.

“We cannot speculate on anything at this moment, and I plead with netizens (to not speculate) and be patient… (Please) pray for the family’s strength to face this.

“We also need to give the police as much space as possible to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation.”

He further said that the police can apply for another remand if they cannot complete their investigation within the given time.

He also confirmed that the duo is detained at the district’s police headquarters at the moment.

Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the remand order has been granted via a statement.

Earlier, Scoop reported that police arrested Zayn’s parents around 11am on Friday.

A source revealed that the parents were arrested at their residence in Puncak Alam, Selangor.

Zayn, 6, was reported missing on December 5 last year. He was found dead near a stream about 200m from his apartment block at the Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai, the next day.

The child is believed to have been murdered, as the autopsy revealed injuries on his neck and body that are consistent with self-defence, leading to an investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

In February, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police have never halted the investigation into Zayn’s death. – June 1, 2024
