QR code for immigration clearance begins at JB-Singapore border today on MySejahtera

Travellers must link passport details to MyTRIP feature in app to generate unique code

KUALA LUMPUR – The QR code for Malaysians clearing immigration to enter Singapore from Johor Bahru effective today can be obtained on the MyTRIP feature in the MySejahtera mobile app.

The Malaysian Immigration Department in a Facebook post has said the QR code clearance is only available at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex for those leaving Johor and entering Singapore by bus and motorcycle.

The MyTRIP feature also confirms that QR code clearance is currently only available at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex.

This is contrary to the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof three days ago that the QR code system could be used at both the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex and the Sultan Iskandar Building from today.

However, the Immigration Department in its post has said the QR code system’s use at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex is only the first phase of implementation under a proof-of-concept period lasting three months, and it will be rolled out to other border checkpoints and eventually include other modes of transport.

MyTRIP
To open MyTRIP, the MySejahtera app must be updated to the latest version.

The MyTRIP feature is on the Home tab of the app, and requires the user to link it with their passport before a QR code can be generated.

MyTRIP is also optional and travellers can still opt to clear immigration at the counter or autogate, according to a set of FAQs in the feature.

A traveller’s QR code can be generated at any time before clearing immigration. However, the code is unique to the passport holder and is refreshed automatically to ensure the integrity and security of a traveller’s information.

As such, a screenshot of the QR code is not usable. A traveller must also use their own QR code as the information is unique to them.

An internet connection is also required to generate and access the QR code on MyTRIP.

Additionally, the QR code generated is for the registered MySejahtera user only, and not for any dependants who were registered in the app during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The FAQs also state that MyTRIP, while currently only available to Malaysians, will be extended to non-citizens in stages.

QR code clearance is expected to reduce waiting time at immigration checkpoints by up to 50% and will ease congestion for the up to 400,000 people who cross into Singapore daily.

In March, Singapore started rolling out an initiative allowing motorists arriving and departing from its Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints to use QR codes instead of passports for faster immigration clearance. It is also part of larger plans to develop the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. – June 1, 2024
