Improvements also include repairs for broken lifts, toilets, leaky pipes with currently 18 out of 21 lifts at 11 stations broken, says transport minister

KUALA LUMPUR – Prasarana Malaysia Bhd will be spending RM50 million to improve the infrastructure and amenities at KL Monorail stations, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

This includes fixing the malfunctioned automatic platform screen doors to enhance passenger safety.

The barriers will be up at KL Sentral, Tun Sambanthan, Maharajalela, and Hang Tuah stations by October while the remaining seven stations will see them installed by December.

Loke said repair works would also include faulty lifts and washrooms, as well as leaky pipes. Currently, 18 out of the 21 lifts at 11 stations do not work.

“Lifts at the Imbi, Hang Tuah, and Tun Sambanthan stations will be repaired by this October.

“Lifts at the Bukit Nanas, Medan Tuanku, and KL Sentral stations will be fixed by January next year. Meanwhile, those at the Chow Kit, Titiwangsa, and Maharajalela stations will be completed by April 2025.

“(Prasarana) is about to upgrade the CCTV systems at the KL Monorail stations from September onwards, which will be equipped with video analytics.

“This is important for the rail service due to unexpected incidents that can happen at the stations,” he told reporters here today.

Last December, Loke brought up several instances where blind commuters fell onto the train tracks because the platform screen doors could not be closed.

At that time, he said the doors were expected to be fixed by the fourth quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, Loke presented a token of appreciation to monorail captain Ahmad Zahiruddin Nordin, for stopping the train just in time before it hit fallen tree branches on the tracks along Jalan Sultan Ismail here on May 7.

Zahiruddin, who has been with KL Monorail for 14 years, saved the lives of more than 30 commuters with his swift action.

The minister also expressed appreciation to the monorail staff and station operator who helped Zahiruddin and the passengers during the incident.

“In 2015, he faced a similar incident where a tree fell on the tracks during a rainy day and managed to save the day.

“So, he pays extra attention to his duties, especially during downpours,” said Loke. – May 23, 2024
