GEORGE TOWN – Police have arrested four Myanmar nationals, including a woman, to assist in the investigation into insulting words against Islam on a receipt from a Domino’s Pizza outlet in Penang.

Those arrested are aged between 19 and 67 and were nabbed at a hut in a durian farm at Jalan Sg Ara, Bayan Lepas, on May 16, Bernama reports Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad as saying.

“All of them were detained to assist in the investigation of the case. Three of them – two men and a woman – are still remanded until June 3.

“The 67-year-old is a man who was remanded until May 20 and released on police bail,” Hamzah said at a press conference at the Penang police headquarters here today.

Police still plan to take statements from other individuals linked to the case, he added.

“We will record the testimony of several more parties to complete the investigation paper,” he said, adding that police had received 17 reports regarding the incident.

Hamzah said further investigations into the case are still being carried out from various angles as it involves sensitive issues. The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

On May 15, a police report was lodged at night over a receipt with a message insulting Islam, and a photo of the receipt was posted on X the following morning.

Investigations found that the receipt was for an order placed with the pizza chain outlet in Bayan Lepas on May 15 at 3.05pm.

The message was under the “remarks” portion of the receipt.

Domino’s Pizza, in a statement, later said the particular order was made by someone who never showed up to collect or pay for it. Domino’s also lodged a police report over the matter. – May 23, 2024
