KUALA LUMPUR – Mohd Syafeeq Mohd Shukri, the son of Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, was charged this morning in the Kangar sessions court, in Perlis, with submitting false claims of RM19,505.10.

Syafeeq, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which states the false claims he knowingly filed on February 14 were for the supply of drinks to the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, New Straits Times reported.

He is accused of using the name “Mohd Farid Abdul Hamid” when submitting a government procurement document for the supply of drinks to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital.

The charge sheet also states that he submitted the claims on February 19 to an administrative assistant named Nurul Nabilah Mohd Sukri at the District Administrative Unit in the State Secretary’s Office with the intention of misleading her superior.

The charge is framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court set bail at RM20,000 with one surety after Syafeeq’s lawyer pleaded for lower bail than the RM30,000 requested by MACC’s deputy public prosecutor.

NST reported that lawyer Mohd Fadhly Yaacob said Syafeeq had to care for a wife and child and only drew a monthly income of RM1,500 per month working as a padi farmer and selling LPG gas.

The court also set case mention for June 28.

On April 24, the MACC detained six individuals, including Syafeeq, in connection with an investigation into the submission of false documents and claims worth RM600,000 over the past two years.

Those detained included two public servants from the Perlis menteri besar’s office and the state secretary’s office, as well as several company contractors.

On April 30, the MACC also recorded a statement from Shukri regarding an investigation into alleged abuse of power. – May 23, 2024
