KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect in the attack at the Ulu Tiram police station this morning, which killed two police officers and injured another, has been confirmed to have been a member of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has also said the suspect’s father is a JI member in Ulu Tiram.

Following the attack, police have arrested five members of the suspect’s family, aged between 19 and 62-years-old.

“Police raids at the suspect’s home also uncovered many Quranic verses, leading police to suspect a connection to JI,” Razarudin added.

Razarudin was met by reporters at the Ulu Tiram police station, where the attack had occurred at 2.24am.

The two police officers killed in the attack this morning were constables Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, both of whom had only joined the force less than two years ago.

Azza suffered injuries to the head and neck, believed to be from being hacked with a machete, while Syafiq had gunshot wounds on his body.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hasif Roslan, the police corporal who was also shot, is currently being treated at the state capital’s Sultan Ismail Hospital.

Earlier today, Johor police chief M. Kumar, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect had brandished both a pistol and a machete during the attack.

The suspect was reported to have been shot dead at the scene of the incident.

Subsequently, police seized a Walther P99 pistol and an HK MP5 sub-machine gun from the suspect.

Speaking about the incident, Razarudin said prior to the attack, two students had come to the police station to seek opinion on a sexual assault that had happened two years ago, which he found to be suspicious.

“Before the incident, there were two members of the public who came to the station, asking for an opinion on a molestation case two years ago.

“At the time they were assisted by police, this suspect had entered through the back door, and one police officer went to the back to check before he was slashed and killed by the suspect.

“During that time, a police patrol car had just returned, and a shoot-out had occurred. One police officer was shot in the cheek and died at the scene,” he said.

Police have also arrested the two students to assist in the investigation.

“We have arrested the female and male complainants who came to the station. If the incident happened two years ago, he came to the station at 2 in the morning… that seems illogical, and we will investigate this matter,” he added.

According to Razarudin, the suspect is believed to have meticulously planned the attack as police found pieces of zinc, paper and cloth in his bag.

These items are believed to have been intended for use as tools for self-protection. – May 17, 2024
