Why so eager to defend your boss? Wee asks Teresa Kok amid LRT crash suit squabble

Ex-transport minister responds to criticism of him ‘not doing the humane thing’ while in tenure, emphasising compensation under MoF’s jurisdiction but he did his part in aiding victims

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has rebutted Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s recent criticism of the handling of compensation for victims of the 2021 LRT collision in Kuala Lumpur.

Wee’s response comes after Kok questioned his actions during his tenure in office.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Wee asserted that compensation matters do not fall under the purview of the Transport Ministry, which he headed at the time of the incident.

He emphasised that Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, the entities responsible for the LRT system, are under the jurisdiction of the Finance Ministry (MoF) – highlighting the distinction between regulatory oversight and financial management.

Wee further defended his actions during his tenure, stating that he had promptly responded to the collision by visiting the scene, meeting with victims and medical personnel, issuing media statements, and establishing a special investigation committee.

He also highlighted the financial assistance provided to the victims, including coverage of medical expenses and livelihood assistance.

Responding to Kok’s inquiry about why he had not offered more assistance during his time in office, Wee questioned the need for a delay in the trial proceedings, which are scheduled to commence in 2028.

“Teresa, have I questioned the current Transport Minister on this issue? I did not mention him at all. You can check my statement yesterday.

“Why are you so eager to defend your boss from the party?” Wee said, referring to his successor, Anthony Loke from DAP.

“I have already mentioned that Prasaranaand Rapid Rail are the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) companies under MoF and in terms of their finances, MoF has the full jurisdiction.

“Do you understand? MoT is just a regulator for train operation.”

“I am only speaking up for the LRT crash victim so why am I being attacked by a DAP leader?”

He urged for a swift resolution to the matter and emphasised the importance of honouring promises made to the victims.

Wee’s statement comes in the wake of a suit filed by Florence Lee, a victim of the LRT collision, who is seeking compensation totalling RM113,524.08 for medical expenses and damages resulting from the crash.

Lee alleges negligence and breaches of duty on the part of Prasarana and Rapid Rail, the defendants in the case.

Earlier today, Kok said she found it paradoxical that Wee, who is now advocating for the government to settle a suit brought by a victim of the collision, did not extend what he called “the humane thing” during his tenure.

“Has he forgotten that he was the transport minister at the time of the accident? Is Wee himself saying that he is not humane?

“Why did Wee not use his ministerial position – which would have been most effective – in offering to do the ‘most humane thing’, when he had the full authority and opportunity?

“His action now is akin to wanting to lock the stable door after the horses have bolted,” she said, as quoted by several news sites.

The trial, set to begin in January 2028, will address Lee’s claims for special damages, medical expenses, and general damages related to her injuries sustained in the collision. – May 16, 2024
