KUALA KUBU BAHARU – Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) loss in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election can be attributed to low voter turnout, not boycott attempts, according to coalition deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

“In this by-election, we found a certain group, especially those working outside (of Kuala Kubu Baharu), did not take the opportunity to come home and vote.

“In terms of boycotts, I see it being more towards the other side (PH). Support from their devoted voters have reduced from initial analyses,” he told a press conference, here tonight.

PN lost to PH after garnering only 10,131 votes against their rival’s 14,000 votes, resulting in a 3,869 vote difference.

Regarding the election petition if PN lost the poll, Faizal said they will look into every matter, and further action will be taken if necessary.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan had previously issued a statement that the opposition would file an election petition to challenge the result of the by-election if PH candidate Pang Sock Tao won.

Takiyuddin claimed PN had evidence that the government machinery was being abused to induce voters to support Pang.

Asked about a reduction of support in certain localities, Faizal said certain locations had their ups and downs, while expressing happiness about new voter support.

He also said from experience, he saw positive reception from locals here every time he went to the grassroots.

“They give us the encouragement to continue our efforts. I believe what we received in Kuala Kubu Baharu will fuel our fire to work harder for future elections.”

Meanwhile, PN candidate Khairul Azhari Saut thanked the coalition’s machinery and his voters today.

He also called on Pang to fulfil her promise to the people here and carry out her duties as their representative. – May 11, 2024
