‘Reunion with PAS possible only if Umno takes PM role’

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite the acrimonious “divorce” between Umno and PAS, there might be hope for a Muafakat Nasional (MN) reconciliation – with some strings attached.

Sg Petani Umno chief Datuk Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff told Scoop that former political partner PAS has to show sincerity in wanting a second chance with Umno.

“For the sake of religion and race, I have no issue for Umno to work again with PAS but I’m wary of being betrayed.

“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

“If PAS is serious, Umno should be given the prime minister role if we win the next general election. Umno has more experience in running the country via Barisan Nasional.”

Although the next general election is years away, Beruas Umno chief Datuk Azhar Ahmad told Scoop that local politics is dynamic and fluid.

“There are no permanent enemies and not forever friends in politics. When one party is in power, we should work to help the people and address whatever issues they face.

“However, Umno is now in the unity government with Pakatan Harapan and other coalitions.”

For Hulu Selangor Umno chief Datuk Mohd Isa Abu Kasim, there are certain party leaders and members who are uneasy with the alliance in the unity government.

“For example, in Selangor, there are decisions at the state level that are not well-received by Umno members. As members, we are obliged to defend the decisions made by the party’s highest leadership.

Meanwhile, MN Supreme Council member Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz countered that he has not received any news of a reconciliation.

“Umno was the one who cut ties with Muafakat before the 2022 general election even though the pact was good for the Malay-Muslims. If Umno has a new president, there is hope for a pact.

“Those with a vested interest will not be keen to see this through.”

Earlier, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party was better off partners in the unity government.

Before this, PAS spiritual advisor Datuk Hashim Jasin said there was a possibility of reviving the pact with Umno.
