Flooding threat looms as rain pounds Hulu Langat, Sepang

Continuous rain triggers flood alert as water levels rise dangerously close to flooding thresholds

KUALA LUMPUR – Residents in Hulu Langat’s Batu 9 and Kg Salak Tinggi in Sepang are experiencing increasing water levels to near flooding due to the continuous rain this afternoon.

As of 6.40pm, the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department recorded Batu 9 experiencing a water level of 39.21m and Kg Salak Tinggi with 8.81m.

Batu 9 and Kg Salak Tinggi have been categorised as “red”, which means the water level is increasing to near flooding.

Meanwhile, Kg Jawa in Klang has been issued an alert as water levels rise to 4.33m.

The persistent downpour also causes a traffic gridlock in most city centre areas here.

According to the Kuala Lumpur Command & Control Centre, traffic is congested in and around Bulatan Pahang, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Istana, Jalan Loke Yew, Bulatan Kepong, Bulatan Batu Caves, Bulatan Segambut, Wisma Mah Sing to TRX, Technology Park Malaysia, Sungai Besi toll, Ampang, Bandar Tasik  Selatan and Desa Tun Razak. 

Earlier, the Meteorological Department issued a warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain on the peninsula’s west coast, as well as Sabah and Sarawak, until 9pm.

Affected areas include Perlis, Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu), Penang, Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim), Kelantan (Gua Musang), Terengganu (Hulu Terengganu, Dungun dan Kemaman), Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut and Bentong) , Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Negri Sembilan (Jelebu).

Also affected are Sarawak in Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan, Sarikei and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit), Kapit (Song), Miri (Marudi), Limbang (Limbang), Sabah interior (Kuala Penyu), west coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud), Kudat (Kota Marudu) and Labuan. – May 1, 2024
