KUALA LUMPUR – Gerakan has set its sights on “defending” the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat in the upcoming by-election there next month.
Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau said the proposal will be tabled to Perikatan Nasional (PN), following a unanimous decision by the party’s central committee in a meeting this morning.
“We will table this matter before PN’s supreme council and will defend the Kuala Kubu Baharu seat. I feel we have an advantage, as Gerakan was the former candidate for this seat.
“Even after losing during the last state polls, Gerakan continued its service centre and helped the people – irrespective of race,” he said in a statement, citing his speech in a press conference today.
Should PN secure the state seat, Lau said it would prove that the Chinese voters are not “deposits” only belonging to DAP.
Lau also said the by-election acted as the people’s referendum on the unity government.
However, Lau said Gerakan would accept any decision made by PN’s supreme council, as the coalition winning the by-election – so they can serve the constituents there – is the most important outcome.
Kuala Kubu Baharu’s by-election will be on May 11, while nomination is set for April 27.
The state seat was vacated following the death of DAP’s Lee Kee Hiong, who died of ovarian cancer last month. She has held the seat for Pakatan Harapan since 2013.
