KLANG – An unemployed married couple pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here for illegally possessing firearms, which is linked to the arrest of Israeli national Shalom Avitan.

Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, 41, and her husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 43, were charged under Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 before judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar.

Sharifah Faraha was accused of illegally possessing a CZ75 P-01 CAL.9 Luger gun while Abdul Azim was accused of being with his wife, putting him in the circumstances of having knowledge of his wife’s illegal gun possession.

The couple were accused of committing the offence at a house in Kg Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor on March 29 around 8pm.

Azim’s offence was framed under Section 9 while his wife’s offence was framed under Section 8 of the act. Each section carries a maximum of 14 years imprisonment and a maximum of six strokes of the cane.

The duo was unrepresented. However, no bail was offered as their offence is non-bailable.

The judge fixed June 11 for mention.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutors Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim and Fazeedah Faik.

On March 30, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the Bukit Aman criminal investigation department had nabbed the couple on March 29, where they were arrested at Kuala Selangor and taken to their residence before a gun was found in a backpack of their car.

He said Azim was believed to be the individual responsible for supplying the six guns to Avitan, who had been nabbed at a hotel in Jalan Ampang on March 27.

Earlier today, Razarudin also said Avitan might be charged for possessing six pistols and 200 rounds of ammunition this week or after Aidilfitri celebrations.

However, he said, the police are still investigating the case involving the Israeli national, who had entered the country using a France-issued passport, and yet to determine the primary motive of having guns. – April 8, 2024
