KUALA LUMPUR – A man was killed in a seven vehicle accident on the North-South Highway just before midnight, causing massive traffic congestion for five kilometres amid the Hari Raya travel rush.
The accident, which occurred at Km 452.8, southbound, between the Rawang and Sg Buloh Hospital interchanges, blocked all three lanes of the highway and was reported to the authorities at 11.37pm yesterday, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said on Facebook.
The deceased was confirmed dead at the scene by a Health Ministry medical officer but his body was stuck in the Toyota Hilux he was travelling in and had to be extracted by fire and rescue personnel.
The other man in the Hilux was seriously injured, as was the driver of a Honda Accord. Both were rushed to the Sungai Buloh Hospital. A woman from another vehicle who sustained injuries was also brought to the hospital.
24 passengers in a bus and its two drivers, meanwhile, were reported safe, while other occupants of the remaining vehicles that included one boy were also safe or suffered slight injuries.
A second ambulance took the boy and three adults he was travelling with to the Sungai Buloh hospital.
Besides the Hilux, Honda Accord and the express bus, the other vehicles involved in the smash up were two Honda HRV and two Perodua Myvi.
The first alert about the accident was posted by Plus Malaysia Berhad on X at 11:56pm, when it warned road users that all three lanes on the highway had been blocked.
At 12:20am, Plus said traffic was congested for five kilometres in both the southbound and northbound directions and urged motorists to use alternative routes.
The scene was cleared at 1:15am, the fire department said, and Plus at 2:05am posted on X that all lanes had been reopened. – April 6, 2024
