KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) has fixed May 11 as polling day for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

EC chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, said the commission also set April 27 as nomination day and May 7 for early voting for the state seat under the Hulu Selangor parliamentary constituency.

He announced these dates after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at EC headquarters today.

The meeting, chaired by Ghani, started at 10am and discussed the important dates for the by-election, such as the date of the election writ, nomination day, polling day, the electoral roll to be used, and other preparations.

Among those present at the meeting were EC deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom and EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak.

On March 26, Ikmalrudin said that the EC had received official notification from Selangor State Assembly Speaker Lau Weng San regarding the vacancy in Kuala Kubu Baharu, and as provided for under Chapter 5 Clause (5) Article LXX of the Selangor State Constitution 1959, it must be filled within 60 days from the date the vacancy occurred.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman, Lee Kee Hiong of DAP, on March 21.

Lee, 58, held the seat for three terms starting in 2013. She died after a year-long battle with cancer.

According to Ghani, two election campaign enforcement teams were also established, comprising representatives from the police force, local authorities, and contesting candidates, to monitor campaign activities throughout the official campaigning period.

He said that the campaigning period, which is set for 14 days after the nomination day on April 27, will run until 11.59pm on May 10.

“The electoral roll (DPPR) for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election comprises a total of 40,226 individuals, including 39,362 ordinary voters, 625 policemen, 238 military personnel and their spouses, and one overseas absentee voter,” he added.

The DPPR for the by-election will be available for purchase starting April 22.

“A total of 18 regular polling stations with 74 polling channels and two early voting centres with three early voting channels will be deployed,” he said.

Voters can check polling station information, voting channels, and series numbers by visiting the portal, contacting the EC hotline at 03-8892-7018/7218/7124, or through the MySPR Semak application. – April 4, 2024
