KUALA LUMPUR – Around 37% of the 1.52 million civil servants in the federal administration are in the B40 group, earning median monthly salaries of between RM2,012 to RM4,764, the prime minister said.

The lowest income band for the B40 group is less than RM2,560 a month, while the highest income band in this group is from RM4,310 to RM5,249, according to a parliamentary written reply.

The 569,003 government employees in the B40 group form the largest segment of workers in the civil service, followed closely by 532,611 or 35% in the M40 category.

Those in the M40 category, which is divided into four income bands, earn median monthly salaries of between RM5,770 and RM10,522.

Meanwhile, there are 23,613 civil servants in the T20 category, which is divided into two income bands, with T1 earning a median income of RM13,475 per month, and T2 earning a monthly median salary of RM20,776.

The breakdown of civil servants in the B40, M40 and T20 categories is as of January 31 and counts the federal civil service only.

The figures do not include those in positions such as judges, administration officers, members of Parliament, members of commissions, the military, contract officers, trainees, imam, state treasurers, and those working in statutory bodies, among others.

The prime minister’s reply was to Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (Kubang Kerian-PN) who asked for the number of civil servants in Malaysia and a breakdown of their income categories.

The total number of civil servants in the federal administration as stated is 4.51% of the overall Malaysian population of 33.7 million.

The income figures, meanwhile, were drawn from the household income and expenditure survey report for 2022 by the Department of Statistics (DOSM) released on July 28 last year. – March 29, 2023
