Firefighters trek over half an hour to douse Broga Hill blaze

About five acres at the top of the hill were destroyed in the fire

KUALA LUMPUR – It took firefighters at least six hours to put out the forest fire at Broga Hill in Semenyih, as a team of 28 had to hike for 30 to 45 minutes to get to the site of the blaze.

Some five acres of forest at the top of the hill were destroyed in the fire.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said operations were completed at 3.30am, while the fire was completely doused at 2.30am.

“The fire was about the size of five acres on the top of Broga Hill. The fire had spread easily due to the winds around the hill.

“We were also hampered by the lack of access to the site of the fire as our vehicles could not make it up there. So, the firefighters had to climb the hill for 30 to 45 minutes to get to the affected site.

“Our main aim was to put out the fire as well as stop it from spreading. We used the ‘fire beater’ method as there was no water source nearby,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, the firefighters received an emergency call at 7.39pm about a fire at Broga Hill, which is a popular spot for outdoor lovers and avid hikers, especially during the weekends.

Currently, investigations are being carried out to find the cause of the fire. No casualties were reported. – March 18, 2024
