ESSCom seizes RM4.1-mil worth of white cigarettes, tobacco in Lahad Datu raid

Authority acts on public tip-off to confiscate three mil cigarettes, 400 packs of tobacco

SANDAKAN – The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) seized about RM4.1-million worth of contraband cigarettes and tobacco in Lahad Datu, yesterday.

In a statement today, ESSCom commander Datuk Victor Sanjos said about three million sticks of contraband cigarettes and 400 packs of tobacco were seized during a raid in a double-storey building in Jalan Tamoi Baru, Lahad Datu.

The cigarette brands seized include red Astro, green Astro, Samson Mild, Samson Menthol, Era Premium, Era Black and Salak tobacco, which were hidden in boxes and plastic bags and worth about RM4,137,474 in total after taxes.

“The raid was conducted based on public information. The operation showed ESSCom’s commitment and assurance in preventing cross-border crimes.

“I want to stress that ESSCom continues to monitor and strengthen our operations to track these foreign criminals to prevent any elements that could jeopardise the security, peace and wellbeing of the public, especially in Sabah’s east coast.

“ESSCom is committed to assisting various federal and state enforcement agencies to eradicate the elements of cross-border crimes, such as robbery and smuggling of contraband items, as well as to intensify integrated operations on land and water in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone.”
