Father of Rukun Negara, Agoes Salim, dies aged 89

He is also known for contribution to New Economic Policy under Tun Abdul Razak Hussein’s govt

KUALA LUMPUR – The “Father of the Rukun Negara,” Agoes Salim, died at Ampang Puteri Hospital today. He was a month shy of his 90th birthday.

Agoes, who was also the Unity Ministry’s first secretary-general, is known for his contribution to the Rukun Negara and the New Economic Policy during the leadership of second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

A notable figure in Malaysia’s development, Agoes was former chairman of Bank Pertanian as well as a senior economist.

His son, Omar Salim, said the funeral rites were held after the Friday prayers today at the Jami’il Huda Mosque in Ampang before his body was taken to Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan for burial.

Omar has described his father as someone who contributed a lot to the country when Tun Razak helmed the country. – March 15, 2024
