KUALA LUMPUR – Muda was “caught by surprise” when its former president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was named as a participant in Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) upcoming roadshow, acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said.

She reiterated that the youth-based party had no plans to join any coalition or form a political alliance with others.

“Syed Saddiq and I were caught by surprise when (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin Yassin made that announcement (on joining the roadshow),” she was reported saying at an event last night, referring to PN chairman Muhyiddin.

She also acknowledged unhappiness among Muda’s members over the issue, adding that such concerns were “fair”.

Amira added that she was not aware of the PN roadshow, reiterating her statement to Scoop three days ago that the Muda leadership had never discussed joining the opposition coalition’s nationwide tour.

She said the leadership would meet with Syed Saddiq tonight to discuss the matter.

After Muhyiddin’s announcement, Syed Saddiq – who co-founded Muda after leaving the former’s party Bersatu – said Muda should join PN’s roadshow as well to raise issues for the sake of the public.

However, the Muar MP said he would still have to bring the matter to Muda’s leadership for discussion.

Following Muhyiddin’s announcement, Muda had distanced itself from PN’s nationwide tour.

Syed Saddiq stepped down as Muda president in November last year after the high court found him guilty of two counts of money laundering, one count of criminal breach of trust and one count of misappropriating Bersatu-linked funds amounting to RM1.12 million.

However, he remains a Muda member, while Puteri Wangsa assemblywoman Amira Aisya, the party’s only other elected representative, was made acting president. – March 14, 2024
