KUALA LUMPUR – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo (Damansara-PH) has denied being involved in any negotiations and agreements with the hacker group R00TK1T ISC Cyber Team after threats to shut down Maxis Bhd’s network.
He told the Dewan Rakyat that Maxis notified the Personal Data Protection Department that no personal data was leaked in the sample database provided following a digital forensics test that was carried out.
“The ministry is not involved directly or indirectly in any negotiation or agreement as alleged.
“Following threats by R00TK1T to shut down Maxis’ network, the company took the proactive step of verifying the claims and it has been found that only the Maxis Interactive Retail Assistant portal (Mira)/Queue Management System at one Maxis branch was affected.
“It is a stand-alone system and not connected to any other Maxis critical systems,” said Gobind, following a supplementary question by Chong Zhemin (Kampar-PH) during Minister’s Question Time today.
The minister added that his ministry would continue to work with the National Cyber Security Agency and foreign cyber agencies to track down and take action against “threat actors”.
In February, Maxis launched an investigation to determine the validity of an alleged cybersecurity breach of its systems.
It was reported in technology portals that the R00TK1T ISC Team published a claim that it had gained access to data belonging to Maxis. – March 13, 2024
