Selangor PKR expects more political ‘surprises’ exposing Bersatu’s flaws: Gunaraj

Sentosa assemblyman says Selat Klang rep's announcement shows rejection of Azmin Ali

KUALA LUMPUR – The Selangor PKR state leadership council (MPN) is anticipating more political “surprises” following the decision of Bersatu’s Selat Klang assemblyman, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari, to support Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari’s leadership.

PKR’s Sentosa assemblyman Gunaraj George said the council views Rashid’s move as an obvious rejection of state Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“The council believes that more political surprises, which will expose more of Selangor Bersatu’s weaknesses, can be expected in the near future,” Gunaraj, who is also the council’s vice president, said in a statement today.

He added that Azmin should “look in a mirror,” as he is the one who is the “main culprit” behind the infamous Sheraton Move, which saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2020 and paved the way for a PN administration led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“(Rashid’s) decision does not negatively impact the state government’s administration and will instead be a catalyst for closer cooperation between the opposition and government state assembly members (regarding) state policies.

“The people of Selangor do not need to worry as the state government will continue to look after the people’s interests by doing its best under the leadership of (Amirudin) as Selangor Menteri Besar and Selangor MPN chairman.”

In announcing his support for Amirudin’s leadership yesterday, Rashid said that his decision was made willingly and without any coercion.

He also said that his move is a result of a series of actions by PN, which he claimed has been silent against accusations thrown at the Malay rulers.

Responding to the announcement, Azmin urged his fellow party member to explain the decision, asserting that Rashid has betrayed his electoral mandate and caused anger among the people in his state constituency.

Earlier today, Rashid told Scoop that he would be holding a press conference to address his move to support Amirudin.

On March 2, Bersatu ratified Article 10 of the party’s constitution, empowering the removal of party membership from representatives who express support for any party contrary to the instructions or stance of the PN component.

The party’s constitutional amendment was prompted by the actions of six Bersatu MPs who had earlier voiced their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. – March 7, 2024
