KUALA LUMPUR – Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) member Harmit Singh has been handcuffed and detained by police during a pro-Palestine gathering in front of the US Embassy here.

A group of PSM leaders were seen asking the police in a video to explain why Harmit was arrested, to which one of the officers said he crossed the barricade despite being warned against doing so.

Another officer also told the PSM reps that Harmit would be taken to a police station for “documentation”.

About 100 people attended the “Gegar Amerika” gathering here which started at about 4pm to urge the US to stop selling arms and funding Israel as well as calling for a permanent ceasefire in the ongoing siege against Gaza.

There have been many protests at the US Embassy here since the war against Palestine started last October.

The police have opened several investigation papers into other gatherings and called some of the organisers for questioning.

However, there have been no arrests until now.

Meanwhile, recent reports said Harmit was released at about 5.15pm. – February 24, 2024
