KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Tourism Federation (MTF) has called on Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to explain the termination of Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Ammar Abd Ghapar from the post.

MTF secretary-general Sri Ganesh Michiel said the move, which took place yesterday without any explanation, had raised concerns within the tourism industry.

In a statement, Sri Ganesh expressed the federation’s apprehension over the unexplained decision, considering Ammar’s 36-year career in the field.

The termination letter, made public this morning, has sparked significant inquiries within the board and stakeholders.

“We ask the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, along with the Prime Minister, to offer a detailed explanation for the termination. Let’s work together to promote transparency and resolve any concerns among public and private stakeholders,” Sri Ganesh said.

He said the MTF wanted to highlight the importance of having experienced and stable leadership within the board, especially during a crucial recovery period from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The abrupt termination of a seasoned industry professional, Sri Ganesh said, had left many within the tourism sector disheartened.

“The tourism industry is in the midst of recovering from the impact of Covid-19, and this move is highly disheartening for Tourism Malaysia and the entire tourism business in Malaysia,” he said.

He also stressed the need for a strong and stable leadership to elevate Malaysia’s tourism industry and enhance its competitiveness in the regional market.

Earlier, Bersatu’s Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin expressed deep concern over the alleged abuse of power by Tiong, following the unexpected termination of Ammar.

She said the recent termination of Ammar’s contract, without clear justification, was disconcerting, given his significant contributions as a prominent figure and standing as an asset to the country’s tourism sector.

Mas Ermieyati, who served as the deputy tourism minister from 2015 to 2018, said she had previously collaborated with Ammar, adding that he had “demonstrated dedication and commitment to enhancing the country’s tourism”. – February 23, 2024
