KUALA LUMPUR ā The Sarawak government has declared a two-day mourning period for its former governor, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who died early this morning.
In a statement, the state government said the two-day mourning period will take place today and tomorrow. During this time, flags will be flown at half-mast throughout Sarawak, and other state activities will be postponed.
āAny event involving entertainment should be postponed, while mosques and houses of worship are encouraged to hold a prayer ceremony to commemorate the passing of Taib.
āCondolences to the entire family of the late Tun Pehin Sri and prayers that the soul of the deceased may rest in peace,ā the statement read.
Meanwhile, the body of Taib is expected to arrive at RMAF Kuching Air Base this afternoon from Kuala Lumpur and will be taken to his home in Demak Jaya, Jalan Bako.
The remains will be taken to the state assembly tomorrow, where the public will be able to pay their last respects from 8am to 12pm.
The body will be taken to the Demak Jaya Mosque for prayers before being buried with a state burial ceremony at the family cemetery in Demak Jaya. ā February 21, 2024
