KUALA LUMPUR – Batu MP P. Prabakaran is replacing Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk R. Ramanan as chairman of the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit’s (Mitra) special committee under the Prime Minister’s Department effective immediately.
The change in leadership is to allow Ramanan to carry out his duties as deputy minister.
With the new appointment, the prime minister hopes that Mitra continues to carry out its responsibilities perfectly in raising the socio-economic status of the Indian community, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office today.
Following the cabinet reshuffle on December 12, Ramanan had said holding a ministerial post while helming Mitra was not an issue as both entities were not a one-man show but a team effort.
The Sg Buloh MP was appointed Mitra chairman on April 18, 2023.
In 2021, Mitra was investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission following allegations of misappropriation of millions of ringgit between 2019 and 2021.
It was found that Mitra did not require recipients to submit detailed expenditure reports and allowed the lack of scrutiny to be exploited. – February 7, 2024
