SHAH ALAM – Professionals who are experts in town planning and development should be appointed to fill at least half of the councillor posts, including the new Klang City Council, said Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
“If I may suggest, professionals should make up at least 50% of all councillors. In addition, councillors in Klang should reflect the racial composition of the city’s residents,” he said during the Klang city declaration here today.
Besides that, His Majesty reminded the Klang mayor, councillors, and staffers to carry out their responsibilities with dedication and integrity.
“Stay away from elements of bribery and power abuse (aimed at) benefitting yourself or certain quarters. (Instead), go to the ground and familiarise yourself with the problems faced by the people to provide the best service to them.
“Normalise discussing and immediately taking action without first having to wait for a complaint,” the state ruler said, adding that civil servants in such positions should prioritise the people’s needs, especially concerning flood woes.
“I hope that the mayor and city councillors take this matter seriously by coming up with measures that can be taken to overcome the issue.
“Orderly plans must be implemented, considering how the Klang city is located at the mouth of the Klang River. Experts’ opinions on the matter should be obtained to ensure that plans to address flood problems are effective.”
Meanwhile, the sultan also expressed his gratitude at how Klang has emerged successful after going through various phases of challenges since the colonial era.
“I want to see Klang become a city that all the people of Selangor can be proud of and developed to a more outstanding level while being known as a clean city with its own historic heritage.”
Sultan Sharafuddin made official the appointment of Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan as Klang mayor, which she has been serving since November 23 last year.
The ceremony was also attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and the state leadership. – February 5, 2024
