KUALA LUMPUR – Umno Supreme Council members have started to trickle in at the party’s headquarters in Menara Dato Onn here for an emergency meeting.

They are expected to discuss the sentence reduction by the Pardons Board for convicted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Umno vice-presidents Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani arrived at the same time at 10.35am, with council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Said arriving minutes later.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan arrived at Umno headquarters at 10.46am, while waving to the media personnel waiting in the lobby.

Similarly, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin entered the building to cheers at 10.55am, minutes before the meeting was scheduled to start at 11am.

Before walking to the meeting room at Level 39, most of the Umno leaders struck a pose with party members, who gathered in the lobby area this morning.

Neither of the party’s top two – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan – were seen entering the building via the lobby.

Other council members Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz were not spotted at the lobby.

Yesterday, the Pardons Board announced that Najib was granted a reduced jail sentence and fine.

The former Umno president’s jail sentence was halved from 12 years to six years, while his fine was slashed from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Should Najib fail to pay the RM50 million fine, he would have to serve an additional year in prison.

Najib began serving his prison sentence on August 23, 2022 after losing his final appeal at the Federal Court. He submitted his petition for a royal pardon in September of the same year.

He was convicted by the high court in July 2020 of corruption involving RM42 million of funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. – February 3, 2024
