IPOH – 20 tonnes of imported white rice were sold out in less than two hours at the Madani Cheapest Sale programme at Taman Klebang Restu public field near here today.
Checks by Bernama found that the selected brands of 10kg bags of imported rice was sold at RM30 compared to the original price of over RM40 per bag.
Meanwhile, squid, prawns and fish were offered at very reasonable prices, lower than the market price, and visitors could choose the sizes that suited their needs.
A 43-year-old food trader, Mohd Zaki Che Hahsim, said he was already queuing at about 8.30am to get a supply of rice at a discounted price.
“A saving of more than RM10 is definitely worth it because it helps me as a small trader to reduce my business cost. When there is a sale like this, we take the opportunity – regardless of the brand – as long as it is of good quality and affordable,” he told Bernama.
Housewife Nurul Fatihah Johari, 38, found out about the bargain on social media and took the opportunity to buy the staple for her family
“Normally, the 10kg packs of rice we buy are used up within three weeks as we have five children, so I bought as much as I could today,” she said.
V. Krishnamuthu, 52, meanwhile said the sale could help reduce people’s cost of living and he hoped the initiative would happen more often.
“This is indeed the opportunity I have been waiting for to get rice supply. Getting a chance twice a month is enough, instead of buying rice every week. We also get to save RM20 to RM30, we are grateful.”
“Rice is the staple food of the people in this country. If there is a chance to sell it cheaply, it is certainly a relief for us low-income people who are satisfied if they can buy the necessities for the day, including wet goods,” he said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited the sales programme and spent almost an hour greeting traders and visitors to the event.
The sales programme also featured the Madani Buffet for RM5. – January 28, 2024
